Postinor-2 is intended for use as an emergency contraceptive and not as a routine method of birth control. It works to help prevent pregnancy when taken within 72 hours after unprotected sex. Its effectiveness is highest when taken as soon as possible — about 95% effective if used within the first 24 hours, dropping to 58% if used between 48 and 72 hours.

There is no confirmed effectiveness if taken after 72 hours.
