1. Composition / Active Ingredients 💊

Each 5 ml contains:

  • Artemether 20 mg – fast-acting antimalarial agent that kills malaria parasites in the blood rapidly
  • Lumefantrine 120 mg – slower-acting antimalarial agent that prevents parasite recrudescence and ensures complete treatment

This combination is commonly used as first-line therapy for uncomplicated Plasmodium falciparum malaria.


2. Uses / Indications 🩺

Malar-2 Suspension is used for:

  • Treatment of uncomplicated malaria caused by Plasmodium falciparum
  • Rapid clearance of parasitemia
  • Prevention of malaria recurrence after treatment

Not intended for severe malaria or prophylaxis.


3. Direction of Use / Administration 

Typical dosage (unless prescribed by a doctor):

  • Children (5–14 kg): 1 teaspoon (5 ml) twice daily for 3 days
  • Children (15–24 kg): 2 teaspoons (10 ml) twice daily for 3 days
  • Children (25–34 kg): 3 teaspoons (15 ml) twice daily for 3 days
  • Adults: 4 teaspoons (20 ml) twice daily for 3 days

Instructions:

  • Take with a meal or milk to improve absorption
  • Complete the full 3-day course even if symptoms improve
  • Shake the suspension well before use

4. Side Effects

Common side effects:

  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Headache
  • Dizziness or fatigue
  • Loss of appetite
  • Sleep disturbances

Rare but serious:

  • Allergic reactions (rash, swelling, itching)
  • Heart rhythm changes (QT prolongation) in susceptible patients

5. Warnings / Interactions / Cautions 🚨

Warnings

  • Complete the full 3-day course to prevent resistance
  • Not suitable for severe malaria or complicated malaria
  • Avoid use in patients with known hypersensitivity to artemether or lumefantrine

Cautions

  • Use cautiously in patients with heart problems, liver disease, or epilepsy
  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding: use only under medical supervision

Drug Interactions

  • May interact with drugs that prolong QT interval
  • Concomitant use with strong CYP3A4 inducers or inhibitors may affect drug levels
