Composition
Contains a combination of:
- Ferrous gluconate / Iron
- Zinc sulphate
- Folic acid
- Vitamin B-complex (may include Vitamin B12)
- Some formulations may also contain lysine or other hematinic nutrients depending on brand type
Uses
Used for:
- Prevention and treatment of iron deficiency anaemia
- Nutritional supplementation
- Weakness and fatigue
- Poor appetite
- Recovery during illness
- Pregnancy-related nutritional support (when prescribed)
- Supporting healthy blood formation and immunity
Direction of Use
- Take as prescribed by a healthcare professional
- Usually:
- Syrup: measured with a dosing spoon/cup
- Capsules/Tablets: swallowed with water
- Best taken after meals to reduce stomach upset
- Avoid taking with tea, coffee, or milk immediately because they may reduce iron absorption
- Vitamin C-rich drinks may improve iron absorption
Side Effects
Possible side effects include:
- Nausea
- Constipation
- Diarrhea
- Dark stools
- Stomach discomfort
- Metallic taste
- Vomiting
Rarely:
- Allergic reactions
- Severe abdominal pain
Warnings / Interactions / Cautions
- Keep out of reach of children; iron overdose can be dangerous in children
- Use cautiously in people with:
- Peptic ulcer disease
- Liver disease
- Iron overload disorders
- May interact with:
- Antacids
- Tetracycline or quinolone antibiotics
- Thyroid medicines
- Calcium supplements
- Separate administration from these medicines by at least 2 hours
- Do not exceed recommended dosage
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding use should follow medical advice
- Store in a cool, dry place away from sunlight
