1. Composition

  • Bendrofluazide – 5 mg per tablet
  • Excipients: starch, lactose, microcrystalline cellulose, magnesium stearate, and other tablet excipients

Drug class:

  • Thiazide diuretic

2. Uses / Indications

Bendrofluazide 5mg is used for:

  • Hypertension – to lower blood pressure
  • Edema associated with:
    • Heart failure
    • Liver cirrhosis
    • Renal disease (nephrotic syndrome)
  • Occasionally used to reduce calcium excretion to help prevent kidney stones

Mechanism:

  • Inhibits sodium and chloride reabsorption in the distal convoluted tubule, causing mild diuresis and lowering blood pressure

3. Direction for Use

  • Adults: Usually 5 mg once daily, taken in the morning
  • Children: Dose determined by a physician based on weight
  • Take with or without food
  • Avoid taking late in the day to prevent nocturia

4. Side Effects

Common:

  • Frequent urination
  • Electrolyte disturbances (low potassium, sodium, magnesium)
  • Dizziness or hypotension
  • Muscle cramps or weakness

Rare:

  • Hyperglycemia
  • Allergic reactions
  • Photosensitivity
  • Gout flare (due to uric acid retention)

5. Warnings / Interactions / Cautions

  • Monitor electrolytes, kidney function, and blood pressure regularly
  • Use cautiously in patients with:
    • Kidney disease
    • Diabetes
    • Gout
    • Heart disease
  • May interact with:
    • ACE inhibitors, digoxin, lithium, corticosteroids, NSAIDs
  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding: only if clearly indicated and monitored
  • Take adequate water to avoid dehydration
  • Avoid sudden discontinuation without medical advice
