Esomeprazole Magnesium 40mg

Uses / Indication

• Treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
• Healing and maintenance of erosive esophagitis
• Management of Zollinger-Ellison syndrome
• Prevention and treatment of gastric ulcers caused by NSAIDs
• Part of combination therapy for Helicobacter pylori eradication in peptic ulcer disease
• Treatment of pathological hypersecretory conditions

Direction of Use

• As directed by the physician

Side Effects:

• Headache
• Abdominal pain
• Nausea, flatulence
• Diarrhea or constipation
• Dry mouth
• Rare: vitamin B12 deficiency (long-term use), low magnesium levels, fractures (with prolonged high-dose use), hypersensitivity reactions

Warnings / Interactions / Caution:

Warnings

• Long-term use may increase risk of gastric malignancy; use lowest effective dose
• Use with caution in patients with severe liver impairment
• Monitor magnesium levels with prolonged therapy

Interactions

• May reduce absorption of drugs requiring gastric acidity (e.g., ketoconazole, atazanavir)
• May interact with clopidogrel, diazepam, warfarin, and phenytoin
• Avoid concurrent use with other proton pump inhibitors unless advised

Caution

• Not for immediate relief of heartburn symptoms
• Use in pregnancy or lactation only if clearly needed
• Inform healthcare provider of all medications and supplements being taken
